The blade thickness gauge is typically used with a straightedge or a precision square to check the flatness of surfaces or to check the tolerance between joints. In violin making it is used to verify that there are no holes between the table and the bassbar during the adaptation, and to verify on a flat surface to tapering the ribs from the upper corners blocks to the upper block (standard 32 to 30 mm).
