Benzoin, scientific name: Styrax benzoin Dryander or Stirax benzoides Craib of the Styracaceae family. An odorous oil used in perfumery is extracted from it, characterized by the smell of vanilla due to the presence of 1 percent vanillin.
The resin, also known as gum benzoe, is very soluble in ethyl alcohol if a solution is made from it that is used as an additive to shellac, to which it imparts a higher gloss and improves its smoothness in brush and pad varnishing.
